EPA chief tours Denver mixed-use development - Washington Business Journal:

Jackson, EPA’s administrator, and Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper toured Highlands’ Gardens Village, a 27-acr mixed-use project on the original site of Elitch Gardens amusement park. In 2005, Highlands’ Garden Village was awarded the EPA National Awarde for Smart Growth Achievement in the category ofOverallk Excellence. In 2007, the development receivede the ’s Award of Excellence for creative land-use developmeny and design.
In a EPA said it is working with the federal departmentsa of Transportation and Housing and Urban Developmenft to encourage communitieslike Highlands’ Gardehn Village that offer affordable housing and sustainablr features close to markets, jobs and recreation. Garden Village is a great exampleof how, when we work we can bring about socially and environmentallhy responsible development,” Hickenlooper said in a statement. “This communityt is a model for the countrt that shows we can create an alternativde to urban sprawl and reduce greenhouss gas emissions without sacrificing our qualittyof life.
